Odprta kuhna (Open Kitchen) is a very unique food market that takes place every Friday from March to October in Ljubljana’s old city centre. The scent of delicious food from the Open Kitchen filled Pogačar Square for the first time in the spring of 2013. Ever since, this culinary tradition has been carried on every Friday, bringing together different hospitality service providers from all over Slovenia.

• to date, more than 90 of the best Slovenian food service providers have taken part in the Open Kitchen;
• on a typical Friday, more than 40 different food service providers from all over Slovenia present their products at the event;
• each week the event is attended by approximately 10,000 visitors;
• this year, at the Alpe-Adria fair, the Open Kitchen project received the 2014 Jakob Award, a special prize for excellence and quality in tourism within the Alps-Adriatic region;
• the project is supported by: JP LPT d.o.o., Spirit Slovenia, In Your Pocket, Turizem Ljubljana, and Radio SI;
• under the registered trademark Odprta Kuhna (Open Kitchen), it is the first and only food market offering freshly prepared food that is organised in Slovenia.

Upon presenting the 2014 Jakob Award, the international committee chaired by Prof. Janez Bogataj, and members Joško Sirk and Lojze Wieser, explained the committee's decision: "The Open Kitchen project is an example of an extraordinarily innovative and original way of offering street food. It has exceeded all expectations regarding the number of visitors as well as its versatility and quality. An important ingredient of the Open Kitchen is its culinary multicultural openness: in addition to dishes from 24 gastronomic regions of Slovenia, specialities from other cultural environments are also offered."
