Slovenia is the only country in the EU with as much as 36 per cent of its total territory inside protected Natura 2000 areas. There are 260 protected areas in Slovenia and these are home to very rare animal and plant species and boast a variety of natural treasures important for European natural and cultural heritage. I propose waking up this "sleeping beauty" by incorporating these areas into tourism proposals aimed at discerning tourists and environmentally conscious foreign visitors and, in connection with local factors (restaurateurs, local craftsmen, eco-producers, etc.), begin a brand-new chapter in Slovenian tourism.
