Activities for tourists / medieval flavour of Ptuj

My idea is based on the conservation of a medieval town with an appearance and atmosphere that are as original as possible, since Ptuj was once a very important centre of trade and business and also a major stopping place for raftsmen on the river.

To begin with we would have to ban motor vehicles from the centre of Ptuj during the tourist season. This would mean creating parking areas at all the entrances to the town, or perhaps some multi-storey car parks. A small carwash at each car park would also be good idea.

Horse-drawn carriages would be stationed in the car parks to take tourists and locals into the town. The town centre would no longer be jammed with cars, which simply do not belong in this beautiful old town. There would also be a significant reduction in pollution during these months.

Late afternoon is when the largest number of tourists are out on the streets. This is also the time of day when almost everything is closed and tourists cannot even buy souvenirs. For this reason all boutiques, shops and stalls should offer split opening hours (9.00am to 12.00pm and 4.00pm to 9.00pm in the summer season only). In one of the busy town squares we could set up a studio where artists could work and tourists could buy paintings.

At the castle, an open-air cinema could show historical films and the restaurant could be reopened.

All those involved in the hospitality and tourism sector should include these new proposals in the services they offer, and in this way even more tourists would decide to visit this wonderful town.

If we manage to achieve all this, the town would take on a new appearance during the tourist season and would be more like a medieval town and a treasure house of the millennia than it has been to date.

A rough estimate of the cost of the project including all infrastructure and documentation would be somewhere around €5 million.
